    1. In case you do pick up the book, don't get put off by the seemingly endless listings of literary and political experiments that fill up the first 2/3rd of the book. It gets better towards the end when Sargent starts exploring the concept itself, the criticisms leveled against it as well as the arguments in favor of it. Of course, any account is bound to get more lively once Popper stomps his way into it.

    4. There are things I liked about this book. And things I didn't. First the bad. As the author, and several of the thinkers he cites, note, utopian ideas and projects are universal. People in every society, ever, have been dissatisfied with their lot and dreamed of a better life. Yet, the focus of this book is west-centric to an unconscionable degree. In the chapter on utopian communities, while talking about monastic communities, the author briefly alludes to Chinese and Indian traditions of monas [...]

    6. These 5 stars are based on personal preference. What I would like to see in an introduction - a direction into the topic, discussions on it, but most importantly, the provision of further references if one wishes to learn more. The whole book is littered with references - which is a good starting point for me since I do want to read more into the topic.A bonus - coming from one who has to study the concept of ideology as part of her degree, it is not easy to really show what "ideology" actually [...]

    7. I love the VSI (Very Short Introduction) series, and this volume by Lyman Tower Sargent is just as brilliant as many of the others I have read. Excellent introduction to utopianism in its major forms: a literary genre, as a life practice (see intentional communities) and as social/political theory.

    8. Very useful for my purpose, but given that my purpose was 'help me construct a syllabus for a sophomore college class on utopian and dystopian literature,' I'm not sure it'll be useful for your purpose. Sargent has a decent pair of introductory paragraphs, but then turns the whole thing into a long list of utopian texts, traditions, theories and deeds, complete with ultra-compact plot summaries. The good news is that this makes the book perfect as a bibliographical reference tool. The bad news i [...]

    9. An absolutely fascinating read. I covers several different areas of Utopianism in a comfortable understandable language, which still keeping the air of a scholarly text. A great introduction by the best scholar in the field. My only qualm: while he still brought in many different theorists and used them very well, he may have quoted his own work a tad too much.

    10. Great read for anyone wanting to learn more about utopias. Using it with my college freshmen this next year. I think it will help them grasp the concept of utopia, which will give them a better understanding of the class.

    11. A book about the history (mostly occidocentric) of Utopias, imagined and attempted. Sadly wanting on some of the philosophy/theology underpinning and extrapolating from them.

    12. this was ok. i would have liked to see more exploration of intentional communities and the impact on current literature.

    13. An excellent introduction to the field of study that is utopianism. From a literary perspective, it was very helpful.
