    1. Francks comes across as a superlative pre-War historian of Japanese society and culture. The pre-Meji consumption discussions are genuinely fascinating, and a joy to read. But the central non-argument of the central argument is becomes more apparent as the years progress. The 1950s-80s are blithely glossed over at points.     2. Concise overview of different aspects of the rise of the Japanese consumer. I think her discussions about how the Japanese home and Japanese food and drink evolved over time -- integrating appropriated aspects of life from around the world while retaining a unique Japanese interpretation -- are her best.
