Albert (as he's first referred to as) doesn't want to be there, he wants to go home to be with his grandfather and who can blame him? He's been put into a class filled with kids younger than him because of his poor reading skills, his teacher is constantly trying to get him to participate, and the other kids pick on him because he doesn't fight back.     2. This is a nice book for elementary age students. Albert, the protagonist, is a half Navajo and half Apache who is orphaned except for a drunken grandfather who remembers all the old ways but does not try to help his people learn any new ways. Albert is smart but does not show it unitl a teacher new to the Bureau school herself takes an interest in the students in a sympathetic, caring manner.
