    1. A cute picture book that teaches various concepts in a way that children will enjoy. It is about a Sonoran Desert Tortoise named Bubby who leaves his home and is adopted by a young girl. He lives in the desert in a protected environment with his own little pond. Throughout the story you meet his friends, cactus wren, rabbit, gecko, and his humans, who work together to teach the reader about the habitat (Sonoran desert), needs, and care of desert tortoises. Bubby also learns about friendship, kin [...]

    2. This is a really wonderfully illustrated and instructive book for young children. I think this would be an especially helpful book for children who live close to the Sonoran desert, but any child will enjoy the simple story of friends helping one another. There is also the message of growing up and being able to rely on oneself as Bubby first rely's on his owner to build a hibernation box for him but after about 3 winters he is able to hibernate in his own burrow. Children will learn about birds [...]

    3. This is a beautifully illustrated book! The pictures tell the story almost as well as the author does! It is a cute book about going somewhere new, meeting new friends, having new obstacles, and also about the life cycle (i.e. hibernation) of the desert tortoise. The only issue is that the story jumps rapidly from Bubby entering his new environment, meeting a wren and a bunny, hybernating, waking up and going through life all over again. It is a bit jarring without the needed transition between [...]

One day, Bubby and his friends see a stranger in the garden. Bubby, because he has a protective shell, is nominated to investigate the stranger. He gets outside the garden gate, which at first he finds exciting. That is until the gate is shut and he is not able to get back in. No worries, there is a happy ending. The watercolor [...]

    9. This book is about a tortoise that gets adopted by a girl named Erin. She has a beautiful habitat ready for him and he makes lots of friends. There is a tiny bit of suspense but don't worry, it has a happy ending. On top of a cute story, the book is educational in that it has vocabulary words and a section in the back teaching about tortoises and explaining how to adopt them. It would be a good book to teach a child about properly caring for pets, especially tortoises. One interesting thing that [...]

After I read it, I shared it with my son who was learning about turtles and tortoises and then we shared it with his class. It was a hit. I enjoyed Bubby's Puddle Pond for all that it offered readers. Friendship, habitats, growth, change, challenge and courage.
