    4. By Familiar Means by Delia James is a book I really enjoyed. Book one A Familiar Tail was really good and I was so looking forward to this one that I ordered it months ago. I still have it on order and got the Shipping notice that is on it's way from The Book Depository. I loved book number two. As a fan of witchcraft mysteries this one is fast becoming one of my go to witchy series! Main Character Annabelle Britton is trying to start her life over in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, new home, new fri [...]

    5. In the second book of this series, Annabelle Britton continues to learn about her witches' heritage. She is helping her friends at their new store when strange noises are heard. Checking out the building they find a tunnel leading to a door that is locked and appears to go nowhere Trying to open it Annabelle stumbles upon a body. 6. I definitely enjoyed this more than book 1! Having met all the wonderful characters in this series, I was excited to start this second installment: and it was as fun a read as I hoped: it was mysterious, albeit I feel like the mystery was lost midway through, yet my gosh that ending: I did not see that coming, I tell you! I really loved the interaction between Annabelle and her grandmother, she was a great character - I'm hoping she'll be in book 3! Alistair, Anna's familiar, was my favourite pa [...]

    7. By Familiar Means is book 2 in the Witch's Cat Mystery series. While I haven't read the first book in the series, I knew I had to try this out because it's a mystery plus paranormal! I wound up really enjoying it and will have to backtrack to book 1 now. 8. Exciting storyThis was an excellent story filled with murder, mystery and magic. A secret tunnel, chef gone wild and so much more in this great installation by Delia James.

    9. BY FAMILIAR MEANS is a nice followup to A FAMILIAR TALE. I like the Portsmouth atmosphere. Anna is finding her way through her abilities, Alistair the cat is great, and I love the addition of Anna's grandmother. The murder mystery is solid and well developed. The paranormal aspects are balanced well with the real world.*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my opinions expressed here.**

    10. By Familiar Means finds Annabelle “Anna” Britton embracing her special witchy powers. She’s truly happy in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, renting the nice cozy house she lives in, and making more friends. When her grandmother, Annabelle Mercy Blessingsound Britton, affectionately known as Grandma B.B. comes for a visit to the town she left over 30 years previously, Anna is beyond happy. The only thing missing is her having a job to support herself. She’s offered the opportunity to paint a mu [...]

    11. This is the second book in the Witch's Cat Mystery and was just as enjoyable as the first. The author has created a story set in a charming historic New England small town and combines it with magic, mystery and a start of a romance for an enchanting read. In my opinion, the author has also assemble a wonderful cast of diverse characters that are strong with depth and dimension. The addition of Anna's grandmother, Grandma B.B is mots welcome. I liked that we were able to see some growth in Anna [...]

    12. 2.5 stars.I'm sad because I know I enjoyed the first one much more. I can't decide whether I didn't give this the attention it deserved or it simply didn't grab my attention to hold in the first place. The premise is great, the oceanside town sounds quite idyllic, Alistair is a terrific cat, and the storyline was quite good, but it simply didn't capture me and it took me much longer than it should have to finish it.I was entirely unconvinced by Anna as a character this time around (I don't even [...]

    13. The witch is back in this second installment in the Witch’s Cat Mysteries! Having enjoyed book one in this series, A FAMIIAR TAIL, I was more than happy to get my hands on book two, BY FAMILIAR MEANS. It was worth the wait!Being back in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with Annabelle Britton and her kitty familiar, Alistair, was a welcome visit for me. I once again spent time with the delightfully memorable characters of this series sharing in their lives. This magical tale was even more fun and ench [...]

    14. A wonderful engrossing story that enchanted me throughout my reading of this book. I am always really surprised when the second book in a series is so good, especially when I loved the first book. Usually I feel a bit let down, but this wasn't the case here.I really loved Grandma B.B. and hope she remains in the story in the comming books. Her interaction with Annabelle was great!

    15. Love this new series . . . second one is a smash hit in my book! No pun intended. The plot moved a bit slower in this sophomore book but it was, nevertheless, a good solid mystery that built upon solid characters created in the first book, "A Familiar Tail."

    16. By Familiar Means: Witch's Cat Mystery 2start with book oneIn A Nutshell: Annabelle has just discovered her witch ancestry and recently solved a murder. Her hocus pocus has not gone unnoticed and coffeeshop owners ask her to investigate ghostly sounds. Then they find a recently dead body hidden in smugglers’ tunnels. The Plot: Left field coffee shop owners Jake and Miranda ask Annabelle to investigate the possibility of a ghost in the new coffee shop. That turns into a murder investigation. To [...]

    17. From the cover: After discovering her mystical heritage—and being adopted by furry feline familiar Alistair—artist Annabelle Britton has decided to make picturesque Portsmouth, New Hampshire, her new home. Now, she can take the time to figure out her new abilities and welcome her grandmother, who is visiting Portsmouth, and her old coven, for the first time in thirty years. 18. This is one of those no brainer fun to read books. It’s fast, it’s cute and made me wish that my cat could do the same thing. Don’t get me wrong, my cat is super-smart; it’s just not a witch! This is actually a perfect book for those of us who grew up (well – how about we were around) during the television show Bewitched; it’s the same type of brainless nonsense that makes you want to continue reading this book! So, whenever you’re ready to drop a few years off your mind and just en [...]

    19. Once again, I listened to this book rather than reading it.Annabelle has stayed in Portsmouth, NH. In By Familiar Means, Annabelle's grandma has come to visit. It's her grandma's first visit to Portsmouth since she moved 50 years after a feud with her friends. Both Annabelle and her grandma are witches.Since Annabelle is an artist, she is asked to create and paint a mural for her friends' new location for their coffee shop. While they are exploring the historic building where the coffee shop is [...]

    20. A rather convoluted mystery! This is a good thing. Our heroine uses her "vibe" to see if her friend's new storefront is haunted and is lead to a tunnel under the store that leads to a door. And next to the door is a recently deceased gent with 5 grand on him. The cops of course think she and her friends are the culprits and sets out to prove it. So she must solve the case herself to keep herself and innocent people out of jail. There is lots of conflict along the way and several secrets come out [...]

    21. I really enjoyed this book. Interesting characters and some pretty funny stereotypes and I mean that in a positive way. I wish there was a clearer reason the bad guy went to the extreme of killing someone - there were multiple reasons but I can’t imagine killing someone over them. Regardless love how the scenes came to life in the author’s hand. Look foreword to reading more by this author. Love the setting.

    22. I like the characters and the setting in this series. The second book was as enjoyable and entertaining as the first. I like the magical elements. It is not a requirement that I believe it all possible in order to enjoy the story. The author keeps the pace moving enough to keep me turning the pages. I also like the fact that the romance elements are kept low-key. The emphasis is on the mystery, where it needs to be in my opinion.

    23. I liked the first book better than this one. I had trouble keeping the cast of characters straight in my head. The proofreading - or lack thereof - drove me nuts. I saw "to" for "too", "it's" for "its". It doesn't reflect well on either the author or editor when such basic spelling errors appear in a finished book. I plan to read to read the next book in the series, but I'm a little disappointed in this one.

    24. Annabelle has enough problems trying to assimilate into the town she has now made her home. She's made discoveries about herself, one is that she is a witch. Now there are added issues when her grandma comes for a visit and they're helping friends figure out if it really is a ghost in their building.

    25. I'm giving this four stars because I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in the series. I really wish there was a 4.5, though; for what it is (mystery with cat and magic), it's a good book. It's just that this one had a lot more complex and the magic wasn't as central as it was in the first book.Still, it's a good book, and I'm going to continue with book 3.

    26. I LOVED the first of this "Witch's Cat Mystery" series, "Familiar Tail" and the second was even better! Totally likable Sleuth, Fabulous characters, a Furry and Faithful Familiar, tight plot and all the Magical "Witchiness" to keep me happy for days! Can't wait for the third "Familiar Motives" to arrive in my mail box! Really satisfying read!

    27. I started out with a lot of hopes for this one, but it wasn't my favourite. I am a cozy mystery addict (I read this several months ago, just haven't been on Good Reads) but this just was not for me. People who love a good cozy mystery with a fantasy twist will eat this up - I thought it was well written, the world was interesting, et cetera. A recommend, I simply wouldn't read more myself!!

    28. A good mystery set in Portsmouth, NH. A cat as this new apprentice witch's familiar. Love how the cat just appears out of the blue. Everyone is always asking where did the cat come from and she has to make up things like there must be a window open, etc. The ending was a bit of a suprise. Some great characters.
