    1. Mostly a collection of biographical and literary takes on what the author thinks is representative of the mindset of modernity and antimodernity. We get pieces on Ben Franklin, Spinoza, Machiavelli, Kant for team modernism and Rousseau, Nietzsche, Sorel, Flaubert, Bellow, Berlin for the opposing team. It is a motley and peculiar list of characters on both teams I suppose if I was going to pick either team I might have made other choices.
