    1. Having been a cop, and then a broadcast reporter who covered crime for close to thirty years, I don't have much patience when it comes to writers who fudge their police characters. Bill Granger (writing as Joe Gash) gets it right. More than right. He nails it.Newspaper Murders is a short novel, perhaps better termed a novella, yet Granger delivers a graphic, world-weary-cop's eye view of a homicide investigation in a Chicago so cold in mid-winter that you'll be hoping to hear the clank and hiss [...]

    2. I'm fond of police procedurals where you can't tell reporters and cops apart. Here Bill Grainger's pulp-fiction alter ego Joe Gash makes them equally world-weary and ambivalent about solving the crime at hand, a boozy reporter's beating death near Bughouse Square. This 30-year-old novel feels current yet absolutely reflects Chicago at the time, complete with a Canadian press baron, a street gang's religious trappings and a glum, snowy winter.
