    1. This book is 450 pages of meditation instruction, and present the most comprehensive introduction to the practice I've ever encountered. Its language is crisp, clear and modern. It seems it took a theravada/vajrayana/neuroscience teacher to make this synthesis of Buddhism with modernity to happen. The book full of insights and distinctions I never made in 6 years of practice with many different teachers. Highly recommended to beginners and experienced meditators alike. I should note that it's no [...]

    2. I've been meditating for twenty years, not making all that much progress and never quite sure what it was I was getting wrong. This is the book I wish I'd had twenty years ago. I finally *got* it - what meditation is, what it isn't, what I was doing right, what I was doing wrong, all of it.The author has done a superb job of writing a readable, engaging text; of spelling out exactly what the misconceptions and pitfalls are; of giving useful advice on how to avoid the mistakes; and of what you sho [...]

    3. This is the best mediation manual I've read, and I've been through a lot. It gives a nod to tradition but also dives deep into the psychological transformation that happens during meditation and explains the phenomenon that you will experience. it also gives very detailed and explicit instructions for each stage and warns about some traps that exist. I found in stage 5 a trap that my father had been in for decades, and is now moving past! It's a great read and even better listen since the narrat [...]

    4. This is basically the book I've been looking for for the past 3 years. Most meditation instructions, even from some of the most lauded teachers with decades of experience, are vague at best, potentially damaging to one's practice at worst. For years my meditation practice essentially went nowhere. Sure, I was marginally more aware and attentive in my day-to-day life, but I had essentially plateaued in terms of my actual practice, and the only advice seemed to be "go to a retreat" (or worse "just [...]

    5. The clearest explanation I've seen about what meditation is, how to start, and how to improve. Effective in getting me to actually do it. Recommended if textbooks work well for you.

    6. A sensible, clear, deep guide to the progress of what Culadasa calls samatha-vipassana. Highly recommend for committed practitioners.

    7. I've only read about half of this book so far, but I'm going to go ahead and give it five stars since it changed my life. If you're interested in making meditation a serious part of your life, you want to learn things from books, and you want a non-religious approach, this book is far and away the best thing out there. The book contains very detailed practical instruction on meditation, as well as a succession of progressively more complex mental models that attempt to explain (at the level of an [...]

    8. Best book on meditation I've ever read. Extremely in-depth and packed with lots of detail from both traditional and scientific perspectives.

    9. An excellent and thorough guide to meditation. New meditators will find that the book opens up a whole other world from previous, simple explanations, and more hardened meditators will find new methods to get them further in their practice. There's a lot of practical explanations and examples, as well as specific method to counter specific problems you will meet along the way. Anyone interested in meditation will benefit from giving this a try.My personal practice became a lot more enjoyable whe [...]

    11. A very detailed book which looks at the different levels of meditation using the traditional examples of at the elephant and the monkey. An excellent book for anyone wishing to explore the depths of the practice of meditation.

    12. Very comprehensive and clear descriptions about meditation. I will review it again and take notes. It really helped me with my techniques. Great for a beginner or anyone "stuck" in their practice. I love mediation and am glad I opened my mind up to it! I never thought I would like it as much as I do!

    13. Best meditation book ever (so far)!Just came back from a 5 day silent retreat and was gutted to see the vague and ineffective meditation instruction given there, not the fault of the teacher or the tradition because all of them are like that-- the one size fits all instruction, evasive/vague/unhelpful answers to questions, claim that their way of teaching is the best way. This book blows them all away. I came to this already having had an awakening experience through an open awareness practice of [...]

    14. The mind is pabhassaram (pali), luminous, reflectively known. This book details 10 stages of meditation, a framework based on Asangas 9 steps of samatha (and other sources). Interludes and appendices include additional content. This is among a handful of books I'd recommend to start practice for dedicated meditators. A strong and detailed introduction to meditation & samatha albeit with some issues. For example, "anatta" is translated as no-self, search for the article "no-self or not-self". [...]

    15. It's a fantastic book. Quite rare to find books of such clarity on any subject, especially one so confusing and full of dogma as meditation. Yet, this book manages to present the a lot of subtle details in a simple and understandable way, without a lot of religious baggage and with a lot of scientific backing. The chapters on the model of the mind can be a fantastic book on it's own. But together with a well-defined 10 stage meditation manual, it's a real gem. To me it's clear that a person with [...]

    16. Must read for anyone who wants to get serious about their meditation practice. Culadasa explains things in a clear and detailed way, leaning more towards the science and practical side of things rather than the more metaphorical descriptions of other authors. He also gives new perspective on the dark night including explanations of why it happens and how it can possibly be avoided. Highly recommended for anybody who feels like things have stagnated or wants a fresh perspective!

    17. Wow! I've just begun reading and reflecting on this book (will edit the review when I've finished , to add more to this initial response), but I want to say that THIS book is the teacher I wish I'd had, 20+ years ago when I first got serious about meditation practice. If you are at all interested in getting into meditation, or if you have a meditation practice that has gone by the wayside, you really should take a look at this book.

    18. The first part of this book provides some great insights into meditation basics and techniques and reading it was really motivating to establish a meditation routine. However, the following chapters about more advanced stages of meditation practice I only skipped through, but I´m sure I will come back to them if they become relevant for me.

    19. I received this book, for free, in exchange for an honest review. This is a comprehensive overview of meditation. There are numerous exercises and diagrams throughout the book unlike many other meditation books. The writing felt a bit too academic/dry to really engage me.

    20. A good balance for the Western worldI have read many books on meditation. None, however, have been so explicit in detail without getting too technical or with a spiritual airiness . This book will definitely help the novice and aid the experienced meditation practitioner.

    21. This book reinvigorated my meditation practice. Very clear and systematic treatment of the process of meditation including obstacles and practical applications.

    22. Великолепный и очень подробный учебник по медитации, на три головы обгоняющий все остальные подобные книги. Еще стоит взглянуть на "Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha".

    23. I'm certain other reviews on the book itself here are already better than I could write. As far as the book goes I'll just say that this is the best, most thorough book on mediation that I have read. Author goes into detail on so many aspects of meditation that aren't covered elsewhere: motivating oneself to establish a regular practice, how to deal with inevitable distractions (and why they happen in the first place), and the fact that actual awakening is available for anyone who really wants t [...]

    24. Absolutely fantastic. This is THE reference if you are seriously interested in meditation. It is crystal clear, methodical, earnest, helpful, unassuming, ego-free, kind & wise.I'm now going over it for the second time. There is no fluff or redundancy here. Maybe make it your *second* book to read about meditation. Not the first, because it could put you off by the pace (it gets to pali AND sanskrit terminology very fast, also asks you to start putting in 1 hour sits as soon as possible). Also [...]

    25. By far the best meditation book I've ever read and I've read A LOT of meditation books, I am also a very serious practitioner not an armchair reader. This book helped me through many tough spots and got me progress when nothing else worked. This is the first book I would recommend to any new meditator, but it goes FAR and I doubt there will ever be a stage of my practice where it is not relevant for me.

    26. Amazing book - The whole meditation process is divided into small steps with clear cut goals of each step. This is a combination of all the learning from buddhist meditation and ancient science of meditation in hindu culture. This book addresses all the challenges a meditator can face and provide the steps to overcome them so as to gain the ultimate goal of unification of mind. Mindfulness is a byproduct of the process of meditation.
