    4. Now published in Portugal, it’s a fictional story based on true facts. In 1939 around 20 male Jews went to Europe on a mission: to save around 20 women (Jews). Palestine under the British domination, had closed borders to ships with new immigrants, unless they were married to Jew citizens. And so Markovich is one of those 20…, who’ll meet and marry Bella. Upon arriving to Palestine, unlike the others, he refuses the divorce. The author is quite critical on present-day Israel; she suggests [...]

    5. Two men are crossing the sea to marry women they have never met, in order to help them escape war-torn Europe for the Jewish homeland. Zeev Feinberg – lover of many women and proud owner of a lustrous moustache yearns to return home, to a girl whose skin is sweet with the smell of oranges. For Yaacov Markovitch, however, who no woman has ever looked at twice, his fake marriage is the beginning of a lifelong obsession. As he vows to make his beautiful bride, Bella, love him – and she determin [...]

    6. This book was different to what I expected but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on the blurb I imagined much of the narrative would follow a long humorous hunt across Europe for wives for the two protagonists. That wasn't the case at all - it's much more than that. The narrative comes second to the prose. The novel is beautifully written, and for this reason was lovely to read, I expected to learn more about the historical period in which it was set, however this wasn't really the case as th [...]

    7. One of the best books I've read in years. Gorgeous, moving writing that made me laugh and cry. I particularly loved the backdrop of kibbutz life pre/during the founding of the state of Israel. This book really captures all the challenges of post Holocaust Jewish identity. Highly recommend!!

    8. A really great read full of interesting insights into the inner psychological workings and motivations of each character.Despite the harsh realities of the background to the birth of Israel and the protagonists, the author managed to keep the tone light and soft, for which I am rather grateful.Enough depressing books have already been written about this period of history so I approached this book sceptically at first. It took 3 sentences to convince me that this was something entirely different.A [...]

    9. DNF - No more nights, Yaacov Markovitch! This book felt like an illness the point that it was making me utterly miserable. So even though I am a devout believer in finishing what one begins - for my health, I had to abandon ship on this fable. Life is too short. I am in search of a novel that will not speak incessantly about vaginas and milky, white breasts.

    10. Beautifully told story of European war brides' life in Israel and the men they were matched up with in marriages of convenience. Author in her debut novel made me turn the pages and follow her forays into magic realism (not always my favourite, but it worked well here). Never knew where the plot would go.

    11. Loved the writing. Liked the characters. A somewhat tragic tale that points out that our lives are affected not only by the choices we make, but also by where and when we live our lives out.

    12. Loved this book. It took a while to get info then I was hooked. Funny, sad, poignant, moving with fascinating characters set against a really interesting backdrop. I would definitely recommend it.

    14. Um, yeah. It was er fine. I mean, not every book you read needs to be the most amazing thing ever - that would be exhausting - but the strongest emotion I've emerged with from this one is that it left me so completely cold. And considering the content of the book, that's quite an achievement. It's not like it's boring characters doing boring stuff. There is the basis here for a number of intriguing narratives, but somehow the interesting has been sucked right out of it. Maybe I'm just not sophis [...]

    15. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The author did a very good job at capturing the imagination of the reader.

    16. One of the best books I've read in recent times. A tale of love, friendship, parenthood and suffering in Israel. Plenty of tenderness, though much of it extramarital, life and death.

    18. Several reviews that I read of Waking Lions by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen (2017) claimed that it was her 2nd novel but the first to be translated into English. But, here is her first novel, One Night, Markovitch, also translated by Sondra Silverston, in paperback in English in 2015. I bought it through Marketplace for $12.38 but it appears to be a UK edition. And, it looks like the publication of the US paperback release was cancelled in 2015 and the eBook release was cancelled for November 2017. Thi [...]

    19. This book by the Israeli author of Waking Lions,Ayelet Gundar-Goshen is a wonderful character study of two refugees to Palestine just prior to WWII under the British mandate. Yaakov Markovitch is shy while his good friend Zeev Feinberg is a ladies man. To increase the Jewish population in Palestine, which is limited by the British, they are tasked by the Irgun commander along with a number of other men to go to Europe and come back with Jewish women Holocaust survivors. The men are all paired up [...]

    21. This book is so much better than the description on the back cover. It is a beautifully written adult fairy tale full of rich, fully developed, and interesting characters who live complicated lives and make questionable decisions that impact their lives in ways that they couldn't have expected. If you like the adult fairy tale genre, this is a well written don't miss.

    22. Happy to be the first one to announce, Turkish edition will be available in 2018, by my humbly translation. This book has been so much instrumental in my career and my life, as of a global citizen trying to understand the world.
