    1. The Yawning Heights is one of those intellectual books that are much more talked about than read.Everything that happens in the book happens in the only really existing Soviet dystopia Ibansk which to the Russian ear sounds somewhat like Fockington…before the war the Development Authority assigned the building to two organizations at the same time, the Air Club and the Meat and Milk Combine. This dual assignment brought on conflicts and feuding. The officials of each organization put together [...]

    2. Some satirists point lean and mean heat-seeking missiles at their targets and annihilate them with the sharpness of their wit and erudition. Others, such as Mr. Zinoviev, pen “sociological novels” of staggering length (816pp in a small font), taking apart the Soviet communist regime in a sequence of deadpan accounts of life under the ultimate ‘-Ism’, a fictitious Russia named Ibansk populated by a series of Iban Ibanovich Ibanovs, known by their functions, such as ‘Dauber’, ‘Writer [...]

    4. Very dense work, but fascinating to weave your way through. A unique and pioneering work, it is best viewed as a 'sociological novel'. There are no characters per say - their names are essentially social categories, i.e. 'Cynic', 'Opportunist', 'Truth Teller', etc. Clever puns and wordplay - the translator did an admirable job. Overall, a fascinating - and wickedly humourous evaluation of Brezhnev era Russia and the postwar generation. Definitely not for everyone, but the experimental nature of [...]

    6. Never read anything quite like this. Blew me away. The book evokes the madness of the Communist regime, drawing you into it so that you see it from the inside, rather than describing it from a detached standpoint. It is not an easy read by any means, but it is well worth your effort.
