    1. Very briefly: Because I’m really unsure what to say about this one, other than that I enjoyed reading it. After checking out thePhoneme Media site in pursuit of all things Bellatin and to see what could be seen of the 2015 Best Translated Book Award for Poetry, Diorama by Rocío Cerón, I stumbled on to this title, by chance, luck, good fortune…whatever, a find of whimsical origin. If the blurbs and translator’s note are to be believed, Freitas writes with an awareness of the ‘canon’ o [...]

Abaixo [...]

    4. Beautifully ludic. Irreverence as adoration, appetite as consummation, sonority as philosophy. Also, a reminder of what post-moderism* might have been and, with the proper nostalgia, might still be.*there is no one post-modernism, only as many individual post-modernisms as there are individuals alive at any given historical moment.

    5. Snap crackle pop!Lots of fun here, but also lots of adept juggling of identity and loneliness with ‘the literary canon’. Freitas populates her poems with Josephine Baker, Djuna Barnes, Elizabeth Bishop and Lota, Gertrude Stein and Alice, but also Ezra Pound and Pessoa. She revels in love and delivers the heartache when it’s over. The writing is terrific, and luckily the Portuguese is included so you can feel what the Brazilian rhythm and rhyme sound like. Your hips start rolling at about th [...]

    6. I did not read this edition. Phoneme Media´s Bilingual edition translated by Hilary Kaplan. Here is that review:This is a blend, a mix, a jumble; it is a Rilke Shake. In Angélica Freitas’ collection of quirky poems the lively samba does not call her to the streets. Her “Rite of Passage” is composed of neighborly looks that silently deduce her identity with questions unspoken and answered before they are never asked. The author prefers her "Blake toasted– and buttered." Angélica claims [...]
