    1. Faithful Friends by Susan Bulanda tells the untold story of people and their pets during the Holocaust. While the German Nazis marched across Europe in their quest to eradicate the Jewish people, it wasn't just humans whose lives were damaged and destroyed. Bulanda tells the story of several people, most of whom were children at the time, who had beloved pets at the time. The stories of these completely innocent creatures deeply affected by the savagery of war puts into focus again the horror of [...]

    2. I have always said that if there was ever a book such as this one to come out that I would buy it. I really enjoyed reading it and fell in love with the pets just as their families did. I do wish that it would have had more stories in it. I hope to meet all those pets some day and give them my love and thanks for being such devoted friends to their family in such a time of need.

    3. I have read hundreds of books about the Holocaust but this collection of stories from survivors about their pets is one aspect of the experience I had not considered. It's impossible not to be moved by these heartbreaking stories from these survivors (children at the time) who had to leave their beloved pets behind, most forever. These are short pieces that can be shared with a wide age range of readers who have some foundational knowledge of the Holocaust.

    4. I loved this book. Faithful Friends was a collection of short stories told by Holocaust survivors of the animals they once knew. I cried. I smiled. This book opened my eyes to a side of the Holocaust I never knew. I loved how the author included history at the beginning of each chapter.

    5. In this unique collection of “never-before-told” true stories, readers learn about “…Holocaust survivors'…[and the] pets who gave them comfort, suffered alongside them and waited for their return…” The time was WWII, when Hungary, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Romania, France, and Yugoslavia forced Jewish families into Jewish ghettos and concentration camps.Heart-warming as well as heart-breaking accounts capture the support, love and affection family pets provided to their owners and [...]

    6. Susan Bulanda explores an aspect of the Holocaust one may never have considered: the lives of the pets people had to leave behind. Their stories reflect the love and pleasures that pets provided to those people who endured great suffering -- many of the pets suffered as well, something many of us probably have not considered. The author captures the deep affection between humans and their beloved animal companions, something to which many people today can and do relate. Susan's stories she has d [...]

    7. Awesome collection of heartfelt and emotional stories from actual holocaust survivors. To think that these people were witness to the worst atrocities ever committed yet, still found it within themselves to not only care, but cherish the time spent with their pets is amazing. This book is not Disney, in fact it will upset and break your heart when you read the tragedy and circumstances that these 2 & 4 legged victims have gone through. This is a very important book that paints a realistic po [...]

    8. This book was very hard to read. Not because it was poorly written; quite the opposite. It was hard because of the subject matter. I am so glad that Susan Bulanda tackled this subject because these stories deserve to be told.

    9. Another view of the holocaust - this book has several short stories about the pets that were left behind when their families were taken away, and what happened to those pets. This book is very heartfelt and will bring tears to your eyes.

    10. I picked this up at the Holocaust Memorial Museum last year, thinking it would be full of heart-warming stories of survivors' pets. Not so. Yes, there are some heart-warming parts but there is also graphic brutality, that as a pet lover, I really couldn't handle, or didn't want to handle. This is definitely not a children's book. I did not finish this book, so there could be better stories in the second half. I figure with the thousands of books out there to read, I would rather move on to anoth [...]

    11. This book is unique in that it's about animals, but also you learn about some of the history of that time period. It's about animals who have been left behind when the Jewish people were taken away from their homes. These are the stories you never hear about in other books. Most of the stories are heartbreaking about the animals, but also stories that teach us some of the history of that time that we may not have known. You get to know the families and their pets.I give this this book five stars [...]

    12. This was a very difficult and heart wrenching read due to the subject matter, yet it is an important book. I have read other books about the Holocaust, but this one had a unique perspective. There are stories from various countries based on interviews conducted by the author; at the start of each country's section, there is a brief history of that country's involvement in the war. As survivors of this era pass away, documentation of their recollections become so important do we don't lose these [...]

    13. This book of short stories about the bonding between pets and their masters during the horrors of WW2 was well written. I felt each true story was written with true feeling, not just words written on a piece of paper.

    14. It was not quite what I thought it would be. It was interesting. I actually learned something new about the Holocaust!
