We read many, many of Lynn Johnston's FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE collections when Jesse was little (kindergarten and early school years so twenty-five years ago) so the "Date I finished" would have been during those years.Johnston's books were a family favorites, but they were also a valuable bridge in terms of Jesse's learning to read. She was enjoying novels like ANN OF GREEN GABLES and SWALLOWS AND S before she could read on her own, so a lot of "easy read" books didn't satisfy her as a reader. [...]

    2. This was an exceptionally enjoyable For Better or For Worse collection. I think it has a nigh perfect mix of strips--some kid centered, some marriage centered, some work centered and some neighbor centered. Of course, it's also the era when John and Elly are around my own age. (Okay, maybe they're still a bit younger; but the older I get, the slower my self image is to catch up to my actual age.) It also contains Ms. Johnston's second attempt at a serious storyline--where John and Phil go canoei [...]

    3. Very sweet, slice of life stories from this classic comic strip. Nice, as the humor comes from the stories, rather than a bunch of set up jokes.

    4. The first few pages are the first (I think?) story she did with a longer arc, and it's both very dramatic (but still sort of funny) and a nice indication of things to come in the series.
