    1. This was STUNNING. There's this rhythm, this sculpture, this jewelling of language that Nicole does which is unlike anything I've ever read. I could tell it to be hers from a thousand miles away. It's a green-serpentine malachite-at-midnight set of colours and textures, a verbing of nouns, a nouning of verbs such that you can't tell whether you're chewing gems or wearing viscera.Anyway, it's amazing. And holy hell is it ever beautiful to have and to hold as well.

    2. A strange mashed-up dark fairytale, that has elements of Sleeping Beauty in it. It is almost style as story: the tale is told in snippets, as details in a tapestry. Wicked queens, witch rebels, huntsman and demonic creatures cavort by in vivid, violent language. It kind of reminds me of Greer Gilman's work in "mythpunk"--but its both more experimental *and* more accessible. Chances are if you like Valente, Tanith Lee and Gilman, you'll enjoy this trippy novel.

    3. 4.5 StarsThis is a simple tale, but it is how the strings of the narrative are woven together that give this story it's complexity and richness. What I always love about Kornher-Stace's work is that she drops you off in the middle of the story with no explanations or hand-holding, forcing the reader to work hard to find the clues to understanding the world. Her books are never easy, but they are always worth it. Clothed in gorgeous language, this is a dark fairy coming-of-age tale.

    4. Winter Triptych is an incredibly gruesome fairy tale. Beautifully written and woven. The bygone language and style creates a distinct, unique setting. I reread this immediately after finishing it! With an understanding of how everything ties together the second read was even more enjoyable than the first.
