    1. A good intro to Sanskrit, but not for self-study. Goldman can be terse; examples could be expanded.Overall, though, a palatable progression of topics. Sandhi in Chapter 3 can be overwhelming, but as the author says, "The first rule of learning Sanskrit is Don't Panic; everybody in the class is going through the same thing."An enjoyable part of the book is that the translation exercises are a "concise retelling of the main story of the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.     2. Not a bad introductory textbook. The explanations are long and technical, while examples are relatively few (compared to Deshpande's Sanskrit Primer). Probably too difficult for self-study, but very nice when used along with a tutor or classroom practice.He introduces sandhi early on, which seems impossibly challenging at first, but turns out to be very nice because one starts to get used to it right away.
